Affirming ADHD and Autism Assessments

Does the algorithm have your number?

Swiping through endless videos about Autism and ADHD on your feed and wondering if you might be Autistic or have ADHD? I get it- those videos are relatable as hell! It’s a relief to discover someone else shares those “quirky” characteristics of yours. At the same time, realizing you’ve been playing life on hard mode can bring up a range of emotions: shock, relief, curiosity, grief, and so much more.

An official assessment isn’t necessary for you to accommodate your suspected neurotype.

Personal and relational accommodations don’t need an official diagnosis to be supportive. However, you’re probably here because you already did a deep dive to figure this stuff out and you’re still doubting if you really have or ADHD or are Autistic.

While choosing to get assessed is a personal decision, here are some reasons it might be worth it:

  • Validation. You’ve struggled silently for a long time. You want someone to understand the extent of that struggle. Seeing data (I’m talking charts and graphs) that reflect your strengths and vulnerabilities can feel very validating. I don’t stop at naming the struggle, I’ll give personalized and practical recommendations for the next step in your journey so you don’t have to keep doing it alone.

  • Communication. It’s been hard to find the right language to describe what it’s like to be you. An assessment can offer language to explain what you’re great at and where you might need support. Gaining language from an assessment can help you share your needs with loved ones.

  • Accommodation. A formal report can put some weight behind the necessity for school or workplace accommodations. For those with ADHD, assessment results may make it possible for you to access prescription medication.*

  • Clarity. Under the neurodivergent umbrella, many conditions can start to look like each other (and let’s face it- the videos on social media, as great as they are, are often full of misinformation). Get clarity on your neurotype so you can feel empowered to support yourself.

*Please note that while many prescribers, workplaces and schools accept a master’s level assessment, I can not guarantee that yours will. If you are seeking assessment outside of personal support, check with your care team to make sure the report offered by this assessment is sufficient. A master’s level diagnosis can’t be used to apply for government disability benefits. If you need this, please contact me and I will refer you to a psychiatrist who can offer disability services assessments.
